- Lithium-ion — standard rechargeable battery in laptops and phones; best kept 20–80% charged.
- SoC
- System on Chip — integrates CPU, GPU, modem, and other components on a single die.
- ARM
- Reduced instruction set processor architecture optimized for power efficiency in mobile devices.
- BLE
- Bluetooth Low Energy — designed for IoT sensors and wearables needing long battery life.
- NFC
- Near Field Communication — ~4 cm range radio used for contactless payments.
- Gorilla Glass
- Chemically strengthened glass using ion-exchange process for scratch and drop resistance.
- Capacitive
- Touchscreen technology detecting the electrical conductivity of a fingertip.
The concept
WHAT MAKES A LAPTOP DIFFERENT FROM A DESKTOP
Laptops pack full computing capability into a portable chassis, which demands different components. RAM uses the SO-DIMM form factor — physically shorter than desktop DIMM — so it fits in tight spaces. Storage connects through M.2 slots that support either the older SATA protocol (up to 600 MB/s) or the faster NVMe/PCIe protocol (over 5,000 MB/s on current drives). The key notch on the M.2 slot determines which protocols are wired.
BATTERY AND DISPLAY
Laptop batteries use lithium-ion chemistry. The best practice is to keep charge between 20% and 80%, avoiding full charges or complete discharges that stress the cell chemistry and reduce the total lifespan. Display types vary: IPS panels provide accurate color and wide viewing angles; TN panels respond faster at lower cost; OLED delivers perfect blacks because each pixel emits its own light.
MOBILE DEVICE CONNECTORS
USB-C became the universal standard after the EU mandated it for phones sold in Europe and Apple adopted it for iPhone 15+. It carries data, power (up to 240W with USB PD), and video over one reversible cable. Older Apple devices use Lightning; legacy Android used Micro-USB. USB-A is the host port on chargers, not a phone connector.
MOBILE PROCESSORS AND OPERATING SYSTEMS
Mobile devices use ARM-based processors organized into a System on Chip (SoC) — CPU, GPU, modem, memory controller, and neural processing engine all on one die. ARM's RISC design executes instructions with fewer transistors per operation, delivering better battery life than x86. Android is an open-source Linux-based OS; iOS runs on Apple's proprietary Darwin kernel.
SHORT-RANGE WIRELESS STANDARDS
Bluetooth Classic handles high-bandwidth applications like stereo audio (A2DP profile) and file transfers. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) cuts power consumption dramatically by using short, infrequent bursts — ideal for fitness trackers and IoT sensors that run for months on a coin cell. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz with a maximum range of about 4 cm; its primary use is tap-to-pay transactions where proximity itself confirms intent.
Worked examples
Common mistakes
- Assuming any M.2 drive will work in any M.2 slot — check key type and supported protocols.
- Charging a Li-ion battery to 100% daily thinking it improves battery health — it accelerates degradation.
- Confusing Bluetooth Classic with BLE — they serve different use cases and are not interchangeable.
- Using a non-conductive stylus on a capacitive touchscreen — it will not respond; use a conductive stylus or finger.
- Confusing the SSID with the Wi-Fi password — SSID is the network name; the PSK is the password.
